RM of Lumsden’s story
The Rural Municipality of Lumsden No. 189 incorporated on December 9, 1912, in the south-east part of the province. It takes its name from Hugh D. Lumsden, the chief surveyor on the 1887 project to take the railroad from Regina to Prince Albert.
Today the RM surrounds the towns of Lumsden and Regina Beach, the villages of Buena Vista, Craven and Disley, the resort village of Lumsden Beach, and the organized hamlet of Deer Valley. The RM office is in Lumsden, and an elected council and an appointed administrator run the municipality.
One of its best-known places is the Hidden Valley Wildlife Refuge, a 130-hectare (320-acre) refuge in the Qu'Appelle Valley near Craven. Nature Regina first leased the land in 1945 and acquired it in 1954. The refuge is open to the public, with walking and hiking paths through the wooded hills and coulees of the valley.
